COVID-19 Updates


These are direct grant payments to small businesses based in the operations region of the Woodlawn Chamber of Commerce: from 61st Street to E 67th Street and from Stony Island to MLK Drive

Local small businesses and nonprofits are experiencing extreme economic hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. UChicago will offer short-term bridge funds to provide immediate interim relief and help these impacted small businesses sustain themselves and support their employees.

Deadline: April 6, 2020 11:59pm

Grant Award Amounts: Funds are limited and will be awarded in amounts up to $7,500

Use of Award Funds: Funds may be used for general operating expenses (payroll, rent or mortgage payment, supply chain management etc.). Priority consideration will be given to businesses who plan to use the grant to directly support impacted employees and who can demonstrate a history of the business being a community asset.

Eligibility criteria and apply

  • Business must be independently owned and operated (no chains of more than three locations or franchisees).
  • Business must have a physical location within the University‚Äôs local nine-community footprint (see below) that is open to customers and/or clients.
  • Business must describe impact to business from COVID response via a simple application and provide additional documentation if requested.
  • Business must commit to using a portion of the grant funds to provide stipends for all employees.
  • Business must intend to re-open after COVID response and provide affidavit attesting to same.
  • Business must be able to receive ACH Direct Deposit transfer.
