The Board President serves as the Chief Elected Officer of the Woodlawn Chamber of Commerce’s nonprofit board. This volunteer leader is responsible for the integrity of the Board’s governance, facilitating strategic decision-making, and serving as a primary ambassador for the business community. The President partners closely with the paid Executive Director to ensure the Chamber’s mission is fulfilled and its financial health is maintained.
Preside over Meetings: Create agendas for and preside over all Board of Directors meetings, Executive Committee meetings, and the Annual General Meeting.
Strategic Direction: Lead the Board in developing, reviewing, and upholding the Chamber’s strategic plan and long-term vision.
Committee Appointments: Appoint Chairs for standing and ad-hoc committees (subject to Board approval) to ensure active member participation.
Board Development: Assist in recruiting new Board members who represent diverse industry sectors and ensure future leadership succession.
Partnership: Maintain a strong, collaborative working relationship with the paid Executive Director, serving as a sounding board and advisor.
Performance Review: Lead the annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director and manage their employment contract negotiation.
Budget Approval: Work with the Treasurer and Executive Director to review and present the annual budget to the Board for approval.
Fiduciary Duty: Ensure the organization maintains sound financial practices, compliant tax filings, and adequate insurance coverage.
Spokesperson: Serve as the official voice of the Board and the membership to the media and government officials when policy positions or high-level statements are required.
Community Presence: Represent the Chamber at ribbon cuttings, mixers, civic meetings, and other community events to elevate the organization’s profile.
Member Relations: Actively engage with current members to hear their concerns and help recruit new key accounts or sponsors.
Experience: Previous service on the Chamber Board (usually at least 1–2 years) or leadership on a major committee.
Skills: Strong facilitation skills and the ability to build consensus among diverse business leaders.
Conflict of Interest: Must be free of any significant conflicts of interest that would hinder the ability to put the Chamber’s welfare above personal or specific business gain.
